Description:

This is a reproduction of the First Model Maynard percussion carbine, produced in limited quantitites just prior to the Civil War. 2,369 of them were purchased by the states of Georgia, Florida and Mississippi, and issued for use in the field. No Maynard carbines were purchased by the Federal Government until June, 1864, and these were of a different "Second Model" Maynard.

The First Model Maynard had a unique cartridge system in which the barrel of the gun lowered at the breach by means of an operating/trigger guard allowing the insertion of a special metallic cartridge with an extra wide base. The gun featured a target quality rear sight and was extremely accurate. Despite its small size and comparatively light weight, it proved well made and rugged in field use.

This gun was produced by the L. Romano Company as a faithful reproduction of the original for intended use in competition by members of the North South Skirmish Association. (Information on this producer and products may be found at  Romanoriflecom). Romano First Model Maynard carbines have been used frequently and found very accurate in NSSA carbine competition.

Note for the uninitiated: To shoot this gun a shooter must use appropriate loads per cartridge of correct grade black powder only, appropriately create (cast) and size his own bullets, and properly load speciality brass cartridges. Unless you are going to educate yourself with the help of a knowlgeable Maynard I user and obtain all the specialty supplies you will need to shoot this gun, you need to approach it as a wall hanger only.

For NSSA skirmishers: Having relocated to Western Colorado, I am offering for sale my Romano First Model Maynard, Serial #129, which has been a good friend for a number of years, and a consistent medal winner in my Marksman’s class. Gun is used but not abused, and taken care of through its life with me. See accompanying pictures. Bore remains very good. Wood  finish is intact with some minor surface dings on the right flat of the stock. Slight bluing wear on the front of the barrel from the sight forward where the sight guard has rubbed. Mechanics are excellent, and the gun is ready for quality work on the line. The existing nipple is Romano made and probably at its half life point. I am including with the gun a new and unused Gorsky made spare which is already tapped for the gun. I am also including a second rear sight, and a new and unused spare trigger. There is no possiblity of "meeting at the Fort". This gun will have to be shipped. A 3-day inspection applies to purchase in accordance with GunsInternational guidelines.

The cost of shipping (including insurance) by UPS ground will be in addition to the purchase price.
