Description:
Springfield,   ORIGINAL ANTIQUE,   percussion rifled musket,   Model 1861,   CIVIL WAR,   Mfg. 1862

LOCK:   clearly stamped year of manufacture "1862" rear of hammer,   very sharp "Eagle", "US", and "Springfield" markings forward of hammer,   strong cocking and firing mechanism,   REALLY GREAT
CONDITION
,

BARREL:   most likely armory replacement,    correct 40" in length,   dated 1863,   marked "V" & "P" (Viewed and Proofed) over "Eagle" head (US military) on left of breech,   EXCELLENT BORE exhibiting a few widely scattered areas of light pitting from end of muzzle in about 6",   SHARP RIFLING,   correct ramrod,   barrel exhibits a brownish color overall,

Our first thought was that the brown coloring was caused by being hung over a fireplace or tobacco stains, which we have run into before, with guns having been hung on walls in dens for years where owners smoked.   We now believe that the metal on the gun was treated with a Rig-like protective grease quite some time ago and that the gun sat in an attic for many years accumulating dirt and dust.   We've gently cleaned two areas to show markings in front of lock and part way down the barrel.  This is to demonstrate how well the barrel will easily clean up simply by using five ought (00000) steel wool and a WD-40 type petroleum solvent.   The barrel when cleaned will then exhibit a very smooth texture and little staining with virtually no pitting except around flash pan which is more heavily pitted from normal use,

STOCK:   Walnut,   full length,   replacement 1863 Type II stock cartouched on left opposite lock with partially readable inspector's name stamped over top of  "Norfolk, CT",  there are also two unclear heavily stamped inspector's initials that look like a "C" and an "O" or "D",  stamped into little squares under the Norfolk, CT stamping,   most likely the Norfolk factory armorer replaced the original barrel and stock with the newer 1863 Type II models ,   If anyone has any idea who the inspector's were please e-mail me.,   stock has been lightly cleaned and could use a coat of Tru-Oil,

Metal and wood on this rifled musket appear to have been lightly cleaned quite some time ago before being placed in storage,   THIS ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR RIFLED MUSKET WILL CLEAN UP NICELY AND CAN BE AN EXCELLENT ARM FOR A REENACTOR OR CIVIL WAR HISTORY BUFF,    Retail value $2000.00,   Sale priced at $1795.00  SOLD-PLEASE DO NOT INQUIRE
Our firearms and accessories are best viewed on a desktop or laptop computer with at least a 15" high rez screen. Viewing on an I-phone, I-pad, or tablet just can't show the detail that our professional photographer exhibits in his photos.

We have been in the firearms business for over 55 years (since 1960) under the same ownership. We are a Platinum dealer on GI. We are receiving up to 50 e-mails daily. All buyers are taken on a strict first come-first served basis depending on the date and time we receive their e-mail. We strive to describe all of our sale items accurately and fully and include professional quality photos of each item. We do our best to point out negatives (if any) regarding a sale item. Although we offer a 3-day, no questions asked, return policy it has rarely been used the entire time we have been in business.

The first potential buyer who states that he definitely wants an item gets it. Those having questions who do not commit to purchase in their first inquiry will have their questions answered but may lose the sale if another buyer e-mails after they do and commits to purchase before we can get back to the first inquirer to answer their questions. This happens almost daily and disappoints a lot of people. If you see something you want- commit to buy it. You will not be disappointed.

We cater to first time GI buyers. You can purchase from us with total confidence. We will guide you through the purchasing process if need be.
