This is an “ESA” marked rifle that has all “E” marked Eddystone parts and retains 80-85% of the original blue finish remaining which blends smoothly with a predominantly dark plum-brown color on the balance of the metal. Some additional mild silvering is present at the muzzle as well as on the other projecting edges and the bearing surfaces of the matching numbered bolt which also has some minor freckling on the handle. Some additional light freckling can also be seen on the nosecap, barrel band, and buttplate. The swiveling front volley sight is still present but the rear flip-up aperture has been removed. The walnut stock has a very dark added military oil finish over numerous scattered handling marks and small blemishes throughout while the handguard, which matches the stock finish, has a short, with-the-grain crack at the rear where it meets the receiver. Unusual, deeply struck, large “C (Broad Arrow)” stamps are present on both sides of the butt as well as a small brass issue or rack number plaque on the right side just behind the stock disk: “P.P.P./P XVIII/4668-A”. The significance of this plaque is unknown but does resemble those used on weapons issued to troops serving in the Dutch East Indies (present day Indonesia), and further research might prove fruitful. The rifle is accompanied by a Canadian type sling as also used on Ross rifles and is a fine example of an ex-Canadian P-14 that has some rather unusual markings.
