Description:
30” F/M (.031”/.022”) Trap model as so-described in Browning letter. 2-3/4" chambers. Single-selective trigger, ejectors. 8lbs 4oz. 1-11/16" DAH x 1-7/16" DAC x 14-3/8" LOP to correct Pachmayr Jumbo Trap recoil pad. All original and matching #'s with original finishes except: 1) forearm appears to have been refinished and 2) gold trigger may have been re-plated. Bores are clean and bright. Action is very tight. This 63 year-old gun is USED showing handling marks in the butt stock but has been extremely well cared-for. 'Crazing' is apparent in the original finish on the stock which confirms authenticity of those finishes. Metal finishes are excellent. Each Gr III example tends to be unique. This one is no exception. I have seen photos of one other Gr III example with this identical game scene layout and execution - 8 digits above this one - also a trap model. Although this one bears 'Funken's name on both sides, I have reason to believe this example was by one of his more-advanced students in 1953. The birds (especially the heads) seem more anatomically correct than Funken's or even Van Laar's renderings. So, for the collector wanting 'unique' documented examples, it is hard to discount this as possibly one of the earliest works by Vrancken, Watrin, Magis, Baerten, or one of Funken's other future 'Masters' able to execute the basic elements of Gr III scenes to artistic quality standards, some 6-7 years before they were eventually allowed to sign their own work. If I loose a potential sale due to speculation about the true engraver - I'm OK with keeping 'unique' and a Gr III 'Fighting Cocks' in this condition with a Browning letter of Provenance.
