This Holland Deluxe is equivalent to a barn find Ferrari. Owned for three generations by a prominent Boston family, we are told it has been to Africa 5 times - and its Kenya registration numbers behind the grip cap certainly support that story.
Regardless, this Holland (#19058) is an unusual find today: an original gun, used but essentially untouched
It is chambered for the famous 500/450 Nitro Express which delivers a 480 grain bullet from 79 grains of Cordite. For years this has been a favorite with professional hunters because of its manageable recoil and the excellent selection of .450 caliber bullets. Fortunately, fresh ammunition is once again available from a number of sources.
This particular rifle is a Model Deluxe, with their striking, deep cut pattern of ribbons engraved on every surface. It has 26" barrels with PERFECT BORES. The ejectors are in time and the rifle locks up tightly with the top lever not all the way over. Of course, it's tight on the face and everything works perfectly, as you would expect.
The rifle weighs 10 lbs 8 oz on the nose. There are some slight rust stains on the barrel, most notably on the side of the left barrel. These look like blood stains and all but perhaps one very small spot, would clean up with a re-blue. As is, the barrels have never been re-blued. You can file your fingernails on the rib
The stock, also looks like it has never been refinished. As is, it measures 14 3/4" long with a thin wood extension (1/4") and an thin (3/4") Silvers pad. The pad is perished and needs replacement. The drop is a very modern 1 1/2" at the comb and 2" at the heel. It has a beautifully executed monogram (FC) on the gold oval of the stock
The rifle is presented in a proper double rifle oak framed leather case with a full compliment of lovely accessories, including snap caps, turn screws, a striker bottle, an ebony and brass cleaning rod and a Vaseline jar. Extra strikers are contained under the trapdoor of the gripcap. The outside case leather shows it's age. It solid but demonstrates lots of "alligator" and the leather hinge is weak and should be reinforced.
The price of this very special rifle is $37,500, as is, or $44,500 professionally refurbished (i.e. stock, pad, barrels, etc).
