Description:
Here is a very nice double rifle by George Smith of Berkley Sq. London (per barrel engraving) in 577 Snider (rare for a double rifle) made c.1860's (SN 145). While a somewhat obscure maker Smith was good enough to get an example (a pinfire) into the royal museum at Sandringham. This rifle is in very good original condition with very good bores that are shiny with crisp rifling and only a few minor blemishes. The lovely grained wood appears original and unrefinished with its history of dings and scratches none of which are serious. The barrels are 30in. long with a mulitple leaved express rear sight and smal beaded front sight. They appear to be re-blacked and the barrel engraving recut. The action and non-rebounding locks are in splendid condition with crisp, about 60% coverage engraving. The rifle locks up tight as it was originally intended with its Jones under lever. There is no evidence of rust or pitting anwhere on the rifle. LOP is 14 3/8in. to engraved heel and toe plates with the rest of the butt checkered. It weighs 8lbs. I will split shipping and insurance to contiguous 48. The rifle comes with dies and turned brass by Rocky Mountain Cartridge.
