For sale, a really nice honest 1st generation Colt Single Action Army chambered for the .38-40 cartridge otherwise known as .38 WCF. This Colt was manufactured in 1903 and has a 5 1/2 inch barrel with hard rubber grips. While this is a smokeless powder frame, it does not have the "VP" proof on the trigger guard. Colt started putting the "Verified Proof" on their Single Action Army revolvers in 1904. This Colt started life as a blue finish gun, but the factory blue finish has been worn off into a gray patina that appears even throughout the gun. All the numbered parts match on this Colt and everything appears to be all original. An interesting feature of this example is that "A" in "USA" on the barrel stamping is just barely visible. This is most likely due to the barrel being turned in one extra turn at the factory when it was made to be properly spaced. Another interesting tid bit of information regarding the .38-40 cartridge is that the bullet in a .38-40 is actually .41 caliber in diameter. Colt used the same barrels for either the .38-40 or a .41 Long Colt. If someone was so inclined they could fit a .41 Long Colt cylinder in this gun and it would shoot fine. The bore is about average in this SAA. It has plenty of rifling left but the bore is a little dark with pitting. It is obvious that this pistol was shot quite a bit with corrosive ammo. This is common in the early smokeless Single Actions that were used, as non-corrosive ammo did not become commonly available until after World War 2 in the 1940's. The Colt factory hard rubber grips are nice and tight and fit the revolver nicely. The grip checkering is worn almost smooth in places and they have a chip missing from the rear of the left panel, and a crack running across the right that has been stabilized and repaired. Mechanically this Colt SAA is in excellent shape. The action is nice and smooth and the trigger breaks cleanly. The cylinder locks up tight with just a little bit of play, and the timing of the revolver is dead-on. This Colt Single Action Army would be a great shooter or addition to any firearms collection. This Colt is an important piece of both American history and American firearms history and this is a chance to get the real thing without spending a small fortune!
