Description:
This must be one of the best Luftwaffe Survival Drillings out there, with 99% of original blueing, 98% of original case colors and over 95% wood condition. This is a very early gun, dated 12/41, made in December of 1941, as Germany was fighting on the Eastern Front near Moscow.
Luftwaffe placed an order for about 2000 guns with Sauer and Sons, to be used as survival weapons in their JU-88,  Dornier and Heinkel bombers, that were initially operating in the North African Theater. The purpose was to provide the bomber crews with a survival weapon in case of landing in the hostile or unaccessible territory, that could be used to hunt, both, the large prey and the fowl.
Sauer used their top of the line M30 Drilling to fill the order. unlike the commercial Sauer, drilling, this impressive weapon was chambered in 12ga(65mm shells) and in a potent 9.3X74R rifle cartridge, that could take down a moose or a rhino. These fabulous guns were finished with bright commercial style blue, with beautiful case colors on the receiver and some small parts. A selector mounted on the side, could select for either a rifle or a shotgun barrel in less than a second and a retractable rear site would swing up from the rib on top of the barrel for rifle selection. It came with double triggers and ejectors as well. It is unknown how many of the drilling actually survived the war, with some estimates of about a 100-200 here in US. They are very desirable collector's pieces and rarely come up for sale.
This particular gun is near mint, with just a couple of tiny rubmarks on the barrel, that are difficult to picture with the camera. The blue is deep and lustrous with no discoloration present. There is some modest original engraving present on the receiver. The original case colors are magnificent with swirls of blue, yellow and red that are deep and show practically no wear except for some high edges. Wood is excellent as well, with a few small scratches here and there, a small superficial dent on the right side of the stock and perfect original butt plate with Sauer logo on it.
The Luftwaffe eagle holding a swastika is impressed in to the butt stock on the right side and is super sharp. Another eagle is roll stamped on the right shotgun barrel chamber and is perfect as well.
A lufttwaffe Eagle/2 acceptance mark is stamped on the lug under the  barrel. All the numbers match: on the gun, barrel and the forend attaching iron. Both shotgun and rifle bores are like mirror.
The gun comes with its original carry case, painted greenish-gray color with inscription on to of the lid and a table of contents inside the lid. It shows some scratches, small dents, high edge wear, but is one of the best condition cases that I had seen. The leather handle is strong with no defects.
Almost all of the accessories are present, including an AKAH cleaning kit, a sling, a manual, and most importantly an original numbered test target!. I have only seen one other drilling that had a test target that survived the war. Two boxes of vintage DWM rifle ammo(10 rounds each) and around 40 of 12 gauge german pre-war/wartime Walsrode 12ga ammo, in various pellet sizes, some housed in a wartime-era Rottweil box.
An absolutely stunning set that would make a great addition to WWII rifle or shotgun collection.
