Description:
SALE PENDING

WW2 Winchester M1 Garand serial 12524xx, manufactured October 1942.  Winchester barrel, stock and many small parts, all are detailed below and shown in photos. No import marks.

This rifle’s unusual barrel markings indicate that it was rebuilt in Australia in 1945. We believe the Australia rebuilds were intended for the continuing war in the Pacific, possibly the invasion of Japan which of course did not happen. The rifle was apparently never used heavily again, since the bore is in excellent condition, see additional details below.

We shot this Winchester at 100 yards and got good results. You can watch our test firing at our YouTube channel Fernwood Armory TV.

Part Details:

•    Receiver: marked “D28291-2” on leg. Misc. assembly markings on several surfaces underneath. Excellent condition, absolutely no pitting. Probably refinished at the time of the rebuild. Lettering/serial are about as sharp as most Winchesters (which is to say, not as sharp as others). Receiver legs have rough machining marks, typical for Winchester.

•    Barrel: oval “P/W” in op rod slot with sideways “C” and two punch marks. Marked “D35448 W.R.A.” on top. Also marked on top, “RBLT.   O.B.S.3   3.2.45” We believe this means “Rebuilt at Ordnance Base Section 3, Brisbane, Australia, March 2, 1945”. External finish in excellent condition other than the expected wear in contact areas, no pitting. The bore is bright, riflings sharp. The crown is good with a little wear. No chrome pads at gas port.

•    Barrel Gauge Measurements: MW (muzzle wear): 1 ½, TE (throat erosion):  1 1/2

•    Op rod: curved side, marked “D35382 9 SA.”, unmodified. Good working condition, slight pitting near piston end, finish good overall.

•    Op rod catch: late type, unmarked

•    Bullet guide: stamped without notch

•    Clip latch: round front, marked “CM”

•    Follower: early long-tail type, unmarked

•    Follower arm: single bevel of WRA configuration, marked “6” or “9” on side, punch mark on edge

•    Follower rod: long fork, riveted

•    Bolt: marked “D28287-1 W.R.A.”, with hole in underside

•    Firing pin: half round, no chrome tip, parkerized, punch mark

•    Extractor: has punch mark

•    Sight knobs: postwar T-105 type, elevation has Weatherhead logo, windage marked “DRC”

•    Rear sight base: standard type, unmarked

•    Rear sight cover: standard ribbed type

•    Rear sight aperture: WRA, no track, has the distinctive profile and punch mark at the end of the gear teeth

•    Trigger housing: WRA, marked “D28290-W.R.A.”, large pad machined to small pad before finish, cloverleaf hole. Excellent condition, absolutely no pitting

•    Trigger guard: stamped with milled hook

•    Trigger: late type, no extra hole, unmarked

•    Hammer spring plunger: without wings

•    Hammer: marked “C46008-1 W.R.A.”

•    Safety: flat top, marked “WRA-1”

•    Gas cylinder: wide sight platform, flat on top of rear ring, probably SA. Gas cylinder group finish in good condition, some wear. The gas cylinder/barrel fit has been tightened to maximize accuracy.

•    Front sight: 0.68 wide, unmarked

•    Gas cylinder lock: beveled front type, unmarked

•    Gas cylinder lock screw: cross slot poppet valve type, marked “P” and “O”

•    Stock: Winchester, walnut, long channel, has V-notch in the trigger guard lockup slot, and pronounced arch in the trigger guard area as seen from the side. Also has flat bottom clip latch cut. Has serif circled “P” very close to the trigger guard. No cracks, very few dings/scratches for a WWII stock, very nice appearance.

•    Buttplate: unmarked, flat plunger

•    Rear handguard: walnut, no cracks, about average dings/scratches.

•    Front handguard: walnut, small crack near lower band, about average dings/scratches

•    Sling: common postwar type

Two M1 enbloc clips (no ammo) and sling noted above are included.
