But it is still a high quality little game gun with lots of life left in it. Any Daniel Fraser is extremely well made, and any Fraser is rare. Over a period of around 25 years, he only produced 3,000 or so shotguns and rifles. At the time this one was completed (1889 or 1890) his Edinburgh shop was turning out only 80 to 100 guns and rifles per year. The one for sale here is a boxlock non-ejector. The 28" barrels are seamlessly sleeved, have 2 1/2" chambers, are nitro proved, and have excellent bores, choked .009/.018. Disk set strikers (bushed firing pins) and a doll's head extension. The maker's name is in a banner on each side of the action: DAN'L FRASER & CO. On the rib is: DAN'L FRASER 4 LEITH ST TERRACE EDINBURGH. The gun weighs 6 lbs 6 oz. The straight stock measures 1 5/8 x 2 1/8" x 14 3/8" over a checkered horn butt plate. The forend release is of the Anson push-rod type. The principle defects of this gun are: It's slightly loose on the hinge, and; The wood is very worn, and was once broken (though expertly repaired and quite solid) at the wrist. The gun's virtues are: It's a Fraser, made during that company's best years. Daniel Fraser died in 1902 when he caught a chill on a cold, rainy day while grouse hunting in Scotland. This is a bird gun that clearly belonged to a hunter or a family of hunters, and it was doubtless carried on the grouse moors for decades (and generations). It has many grouse seasons left in it.
