Description:
Serial #8885, .38 RF, 4 1/2” octagon barrel with a very good bore that has light-moderate freckling along its length. This is the unfuted with the external gate spring, large Hammer screw with the converted percussion barrel showing the filled in load lever channel described on pg 319 of "A Study of Colt Conversions & Other Percussion Revolvers" by McDowell. This little revolver has all matching numbers, although wedge and interestingly the cylinder are not numbered and never was. This may have been a old replacement but matches the gun perfectly. The metal having an excellent, period applied nickel finish with some flaking on the cylinder and barrel, as well as some small impact marks on the right side of the barrel at the wedge. The nickel was applied by Colt since the ghost of an earlier serial number are just visible underneath the matching numerals on the barrel lug. The underlying metal has a darkly freckled pewter gray patina where exposed. The walnut grip is in fine shape with only some minor handling marks and blemishes, and the old oil finish has worn at the sides of the butt. The lock-up is still solid and the mechanism is fully functional without any lateral play in the barrel. This is a great looking Colt conversion in very good-near fine condition that would make a nice addition to any collection. {Ref: “A Study of Colt Conversions and Other Percussion Revolvers” by R.
