Description:
SOLD

Springfield Armory M1 Garand, serial number 24301xx, made in January 1944. SA 11-65 barrel with a bright bore and excellent gauge measurements. New stock and handguards. All parts are detailed below and shown in photos. No import marks.

This rifle is in excellent used condition. It has NM (National Match) marked front and rear sights, gas cylinder, and op rod. Not glass bedded, handguard/lower band not unitized.

We test fired this Garand and got good results at 100 yards. You can see a video of our test firing at our YouTube channel, Fernwood Armory TV.

The gun has been disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. Parts were clean for photos, coated with oil and greased where appropriate when reassembled.

Part Details:

  • Receiver: marked “D 28291 32” on leg, heat lot 052A<>. Excellent condition, new finish.
  • Barrel: marked “SA 6535448 11 65 MD51” in op rod slot along with “P” and “M” and a tiny stars and eagle. Bore is bright, rifling and crown excellent, chrome pads at gas port. External finish is very good. The bottom of the barrel where the op rod saddle rides has been polished.
  • Barrel Gauge Measurements: MW(muzzle wear): 1, TE(throat erosion):  3
  • Clip latch: late square front type, unmarked
  • Op rod: marked “7790722-RA”, also “NM” on handle. Good condition, no pitting, finish worn in the expected contact areas, also the saddle has been polished. Op rod and bolt cycle freely by tilting when everything is assembled except main spring and hammer (Garands with binding or rubbing op rods tend to have feeding and/or ejecting problems). RA (Remington Arms) made op rods for the National Match program, and these were also used for general rebuilds. They are very similar to standard op rods but the bends are slightly different.
  • Op rod catch: late type, unmarked
  • Bullet guide: stamped without notch, unmarked
  • Follower: late type, marked “12”
  • Follower arm: no bevel
  • Follower rod: long fork, riveted
  • Bolt: marked “D28287-12 SA 011A<>”
  • Firing pin: half round, no chrome tip
  • Rear sight assembly: new NM, base marked “NM/2A”, windage knob marked “NM”, aperture marked “NM” and “520” with rotating hood for 1/2 min adjustment. NM aperture is .520”, compared to standard .069”. Smaller aperture can increase accuracy, hood can reduce aperture glare. Standard Garand sight adjustment is approximately 1 inch per click at 100 yards, NM rear sight gives 1/2 inch windage and elevation adjustments (NM windage knob threads are 64 tpi, so the base moves half as much as with 32 tpi standard threads).
  • Trigger housing:  marked “D28290-8-SA” Small pad, cloverleaf hole, finish good condition
  • Trigger guard: stamped with stamped hook
  • Trigger: late type, no extra hole
  • Hammer: marked “C46008-7 SA”
  • Hammer spring plunger: WWII type with wings
  • Safety: round top, unmarked
  • Gas cylinder: wide sight platform, flat on top of rear ring, rear tab marked “NM”. Gas cylinder group finish excellent. The gas cylinder/barrel fit has been tightened to maximize accuracy. NM gas cylinder modifications are: rear ring internal diameter enlarged to avoid barrel contact; rear tab narrowed to avoid front handguard contact.
  • Front sight: ears 0.70 wide, marked “NM 062”. NM front sight blade is .062” wide, compared to the standard .084”. Narrower blade can increase accuracy.
  • Gas cylinder lock: beveled front WWII type. Note: in test firing, we found that this rifle would shoot a better group with a flash hider, so this was left on (repro T-37). The standard GC lock will be shipped as well.
  • Gas cylinder screw: cross slot, poppet valve type, marked “HRA”
  • Stock and handguards: new, walnut, new condition
  • Accessories: web sling, new repro. Cleaning rod, bore brush, oiler, combination tool, greasepot, which all fit in the stock, also 1969 Army M1 manual.
