Description:
This Model 1875 is one of Wincester's earliest reloading tools. Caliber is .44 Winchester Center Fire. Centrally-primed cartridges were a new thing back in the 1870's. They were produced from 1875 to approximately 1882. When Winchester introduced their Model 1873 in caliber .44 Winchester Center Fire (a.k.a. 44-40), this simple hand tool made it possible to reload spent cartridges. This could not be done with preceeding .44 Rimfire models like the Henry and Model 1866 which could be a serious drawback on the American Frontier when towns and a source of supplies were often hundreds of miles apart.  Compared to the muzzle loader, once you ran out of shells, your repeating rifle went from a 16-shooter to an 0-shooter. The Winchester 1873 was one of the first commercial guns to use ammunition that could be reloaded.  With this tool, the New Winchester Model 1873 repeating rifle became relatively sustainable which is why the 44-40 was called often simply referred to as the "FRONTIER CALIBER".  Overall condition is NRA Antique Very Good with 15% original gold paint externally and 50% inside the handles. . Good sharp 44 WCF marking on side of top handle near the hinge. Original Winchester October 20, 1874 patent date cast into the top of the handle. The 1874 patent is fully legible and better than some I've seen. This would make a great accessory to the 1st or 2nd Model Winchester 1873 saddle ring carbine or a rifle.
