Description:
This is a rare Winchester Model 26 Full Buckhorn Rear Sight.  This has to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing sights Winchester ever made.  Most Winchester Sporting rifles came standard with the Model 22 Semi-Buckhorn Rear Sight for nearly five decades circa 1883-1930's. The Model 26, also known as the Full Buckhorn or California Buckhorn, was a special order sight which was offered in Winchester catalogs as well.  The sight has a pair tapered horns which curl up and over the aperture; the tips almost touching one another. They really do look like the horns on a big buck deer! This was a special order item from Winchester that was probably introduced sometime in the early 20th century. What I can tell you is that they are not common. The first time I saw one of these was on a high-condition Model 1894 Rifle in caliber 32-40 years ago years ago. After seeing thousands of Winchesters with the semi-buckhorns over the years, to see one these beautiful sights mounted atop the barrel of a nice Winchester Lever Action Rifle for the first time really made an impression. Styled after the Plains Rifles that came west in the mid-19th century, these California Bucks are as much a work of art as they are a working component on a rifle. This one is in Excellent Condition with 95% original blue. Comes with its original Winchester elevator which is also circa early 20th century complete with serrated thumb-piece and 1901 patent date. If you've got a nice Winchester 1873, 1892, 1894, 1885, 1886, or 1895 you want to show off, a full buckhorn would be icing on the cake!
