Joh. Springer is one of the finest names in Continental sporting arms creating their masterpieces in Austria's famed gun center near Vienna since 1855. Purveyors of their fine firearms to the Emperor of Austria, the royal families of Monaco, Archduke Ferdinand, and many other elite sporting figures throughout Europe and Russia, the rifles and shotguns produced by Springer had no equals. This beautiful full sidelock 16 bore sn239-02 was built in the 1920's and has been incredibly well cared for. It is a wonderfully balanced, 6 1/4lb. game gun with the finest Krupp barrels stretching out to 29 1/8" (proper length for a European gun as they used Metric units of measurement) and choked IC/M. The engraving is superbly executed rose and scroll covering 70% of the action, ejectors are strong and well timed, triggers are crisp. The action has five locking mechanisms, including a Greener style cross bolt, double underlug bites, with additional stability provided by double through action barrel lugs and side clips, and remains tight as a new gun on hinge and breech face. All of the features of a best gun are present, including cocking indicators, removable striker discs, intercepting sears, rounded frame...just a gorgeous vintage shotgun. Johann Springer trained in Birmingham and you can see the English influence throughout this gun. It DOES NOT have the characteristics of the German gun makers...just look at the engraving. To buy a fine Austrian sidelock 16 bore in excellent condition for less than $6000 is an amazing find. If you want the cheek piece gone it is an easy task and would involve restoring the wood as well for a total cost of $500 added. There would be no sign the cheek piece was ever there and the shape of the stock would look like the perfect English sporting gun. Thanks for looking!
