This is a 1923 made, Austrian proofed rifle that has retained 95-97% of the original blue finish with some mild silvering at the muzzle and some of the high edges as well as a single small cleaned spot on the top of the barrel behind the sight just behind the address where the metal is bright. The barrel also has some very mild freckling on one side of the barrel. The barrel is maker marked: “JOH. SPRINGER's ERBEN, WIEN” (Johann Springer's Heirs/Successors, Vienna) and has a folding U-notch rear sight mated to a Lyman sporting bead front. The receiver has extensive oak leaf and acorn engraving throughout which carries over onto the trigger guard and metal buttplate. The bolt retains 85% plus of the original color case-hardening with subtle jeweled finish along the brightly finished body and some very mild spots of freckling on the butter-knife handle. An attractive engraved rosette motif with scrollwork accents adorns the handle (which is finely grooved along the underside) and cocking-piece. The walnut stock is in excellent shape with only a few minor handling marks scattered about the dark oil finish which has still sharp checkering on the rounded butt pistol grip and forend with semi-schnabel tip and rounded continental cheek-piece. The diminutive nature of the rifle initially prompts one to assume that it was intended for a child but the length of pull is still a healthy 14” and fits an adult quite well. In any event, this is an absolutely stellar ultra-lightweight sporting rifle chambered in a great round and retaining a high degree of the original finish on both the metal and wood. It would make a handsome addition to any collection. The 5.6 Vierling Caliber is much like the .22 Hornet with a thinner/narrower rim and .222 bullet. It operates at lower pressures then the .22 Hornet. The hornet caliber can be chambered but it is not advisable to fire as this action was not intended to take such pressure.
