Description:
During the first year of production (1861) 4600 of these 1861 Navy’s were completed.  A Colt letter should be obtained, as this extremely early three-digit revolver may have gone to an interesting destination (a Southern State).  This gun #958, was sold to an individual or dealer, as there is no sign of military inspection.  During the first year, 1861 Navy production serial numbers ran 1 to 4600.

Lightly scratched on the brass buttstrap, in cross-hatched block letters, is "T I B".

This Colt has very distinct matching serial numbers on barrel, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, and arbor pin.  The wedge looks old but has no number.  Rammers were never numbered, being interchangeable.  The New York barrel address is quite readable as is “Colts Patent” on the frame.  The Texas Navy battle scene is essentially gone from the cylinder, but the “Colt’s Patent No. 958” banner is distinct.  Pictures of all cylinder panels are shown.  The frame is a smooth dull grey, interrupted with a couple of places of light pitting.  The barrel is also gray, turning slightly blue on the underside, and overall with a few light scattered pits.  The rammer assembly is also grey, with very smooth surfaces.

The one-piece walnut grips are exceptionally nice.  They fit the brass straps perfectly, never sanded and showing no signs of shrinkage or abuse.  They have smooth surfaces with a slight sheen, and only minor loses at toe on both sides.  The brass backstrap and trigger guard retain a natural mustard color from limited handling.  The trigger guard “36 Cal” marking is prominent.

The mechanism works properly, with cylinder fully advancing and locking up each time hammer is cocked.  The bore has strong lands and grooves, with the expected even distribution of light pitting.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I would call this one a 7 bore condition.  The German silver blade front sight is present and unaltered, as is the normal sighting groove on hammer.

The last picture shows an unidentified westerner with a Colt 1861 Navy, from True West magazine and former collection of Robert McCubbin.  This may be a tintype, as the image is clearly reversed.

This gun would look great in a period holster!
