Description:
This revolver was used during William Spencer McCaskey’s long service in the United States military 1861-1907. He enlisted as a private in April 1861 and was mustered out July 1865.
After serving 4 years in the Civil War McCaskey continued with the Indian Wars at Forts Randall (D.T.), Wadsworth (D.T.), Snelling (M.T.), Ripley (MN), Lincoln (D.T.), Brown (TX), Leavenworth (KS), and Assinniboine (D.T.) 1866-95. While he was commander of Fort Lincoln, he told Mrs. George Armstrong Custer of the massacre of her husband and his troops at the Little Big Horn on June 25, 1876. In 1898-99 he was stationed in Cuba, and then to Manilla (Philippines) 1904-05. His last two years were in Arizona, Wyoming, and a final return to Montana with the rank of Major-General. He died in 1914.
At the time of purchase a number of old cabinet photos and some military record documents were obtained from the McCaskey family. These photographs were taken at various military post locations where McCaskey had been stationed. Included is a notarized document verifying that this gun, photos, and record documents came from the McCaskey family. Much additional research on McCaskey has been added, and all of this documentation is included in a large ring binder.
The Remington New Model Army was produced from 1863 to 1875, with most of the total 132,000 manufactured 1863-65. The Remington issues began to dominate over Colt after 1863, as the latter manufacturer was being urged by ordnance officials to redesign to a more rigid frame. The serial number 64xxx is found under the grips and on the bottom of the 8” barrel. This Remington 44 caliber percussion revolver was manufactured March 1864. It is engraved in a typical pattern as seen on Remington New Models of this period. All factory markings are bold, including the barrel address, serial numbers, and inspection letters. The mechanism works properly, and the bore shows strong rifling with the expected amount of scattered light pitting. The ivory grips are full and free of any chips. The original “pinched” type front sight is present and unaltered, as is the normal sighting groove in the topstrap.

No International sales. Not being sold as a shooter, but as a collector’s Remington New Model. If you want to shoot any older gun, first take it to a competent gunsmith and have it checked out.
