Description: This rifle was manufactured in 1892 and sometime after 1935 when the model 71 replaced the 1886, a Model 71 barrel was screwed into this rifle's receiver. The person/persons performing this transformation were unaware or didn't care that the Nickel Steel receiver of the 1886 is not really equipped to handle the power of the .348 cartridge.Model 71s were built using Winchester Proof Steel receivers and had other improvements designed for the most powerful lever action cartridge of the time.As a result, this rifle appears to have grown a head-space problem as, the bolt locks are loose in their races and the bolt itself can be moved back and forth while in battery. It would be prudent to return this rifle to an original caliber from it's inception and restore it mechanically, at least for safety sake.I can only imagine the felt recoil of shooting this rifle with straight stock and crescent butt with full house .348 loads.SOLD AS IS.
