Description:
Ambrose Burnside won first prize for carbine design at West Point in 1857.  It chambered a tapered 54 caliber cartridge with a brass ring seal, and a hole in the back end to allow ignition by a percussion cap.  The lever-actioned rotating block closed to compress that brass ring for a pressure seal.  As the lever was closed it also locked, requiring release by pressing downward on the inner lever.  It could be loaded and fired 12 times per minute.  Weighing only 7 pounds, this little carbine could be easily pointed and fired with one hand if required.  When the Civil War broke out the North ordered 55,000 of these, making it the third most used carbine during that war.  Many were captured and used by Confederate forces.  It has been estimated that 43 Union units were using the Burnside, along with 7 Confederate cavalry regiments during 1863-64.

This is an improved 4th Model (sometimes called a 5th Model) with the single screw added in the center of the right side of frame.  This screw shortened the block travel, speeding up the time to load and reload.  The forward top of frame is stamped “Burnsides Patent / Model of 1864” showing some weakness in the stamping as originally produced.  The casehardening has faded to a silvery gray.  Deeply stamped on the forward top of frame (under patent) and breachblock is the serial number 2393.  The letters “H” and “C” are stamped on the left side of lever and block components, and on the bottom are “W” and “G”.  The lever mechanism works smoothly with a loud click when locked closed.  The hammer also cocks loudly into the half and full positions.  The nipple for Top Hat caps appears to be original.  The back action lock is stamped “Burnside Rifle Co. / Providence R.I.” with a “C” inspector mark.  The original saddle ring and slide bar are intact.

The round barrel measures 21 inches from breach to muzzle.  The bore remains sharp and bright with five lands and grooves and expected dispersed light pitting.  The original dovetailed front sight is intact, as is the buckhorn rear sight with a flip-up ladder graduated “3” and “5”.

The barrel and frame metal surfaces are unusually free of nicks and dings.  The original lanyard ring is affixed to the buttstock.  The inspection marks “C” and “G” are found on the bottom of the fore end, which may be sub-inspector George Curtis.  The wood is generally smooth with random dings from normal handling.  The buttplate is free of pitting, with an “S” inspector’s mark on the upper tang.
