- Note: This 1896 manufactured Marlin is in the very popular 38-55 caliber. Bore is bright with strong lands and grooves. The gun appears to have been refinished a long time ago. The octagon barrel may have been replaced at some point, as there are no Marlin marks on the barrel anywhere and it bears the caliber marking "38-55" in large die-struck numbers, as well as this statement, "1 of 1000" and the letters "WF & Co." struck on the left barrel flat above the forend. We don't feel this is a legitimate Wells Fargo rifle, although individual agents often bought their own guns. Wells Fargo's actual name is "Wells Fargo Co. & Express". The only WF & Co. that we're familiar with came late on some Winchester and Colt firearms. Wood appears to be original to the gun. As we've said before, it's been refinished at some point but could be reworked by a qualified wood worker. A solid gun mechanically.
