Description:
We see this American model in the standard 8” barrel, and a very few with a 6” barrel.  But finding an original 7” is virtually impossible.  They are probably as rare as the Colt Walker!

According to Smith & Wesson factory records, #22717 was shipped to the predominant dealer M. W. Robinson of NYC on June 11, 1873.  It was in 44 Russian with smooth walnut grips, and was among a total of 140 guns with 7” and 8” barrels in both blue and nickel finish.

This particular revolver was returned to Smith & Wesson for rework in Feb 1923 and is so marked under the grips “2-23”.  At that time a star was added to the original butt serial number, and the number 22717 was stamped on the barrel, rear of cylinder, and underside of barrel latch.  The barrel number “227 / 17” is on the two rear flats on each side of the barrel latch.  The serial number remains on the inside of the grips as originally stamped in 1873.  The barrel address was re-rolled “Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass. U.S.A.” with Maltese crosses at each end.  Notice that the barrel address was centered on the barrel rib, again confirming the special barrel length.  The revolver was nickel plated except for the hammer, barrel latch, extractor cam, cam release, and extractor.  Of that nickel finish what remains is barrel (20%), cylinder 90%, and frame / grip frame-butt / trigger guard 80%.  The balance blends into a gray metal speckled with light oxide and a few areas of light pitting.

The mechanism works almost as if new, with perfect cylinder indexing as hammer is slowly drawn back into full cock.  The safety notch is not broken.  The extractor can be released by pressing backward on the cam release.  That checkered cam release is often found missing or replaced, with some crude fabrication, but this original release remains intact.  The bore has six strong lands and grooves with the expected scattered areas of light pitting.  The grips show some shrinkage, but the butt was never used as a hammer.  A butt screw was installed by the factory, as the original buyer did not want a lanyard ring.  The barrel measures exactly 7.0” with a machinist’s scale, the muzzle is crowned as all Americans should be, about 0.50” ahead of the barrel rib ending.  The original “half moon” steel sight is pinned to the rib as originally done by Smith & Wesson.

All factory markings are very distinct, including the barrel address and serial numbers.  All screw heads remain in decent condition, with some wear to the slots of two or three.  A very rare S&W American that is now 143 years old, and in desirable condition.  Comes with factory letter.

Can ship this one directly to buyer, no FFL Required.
