Description:
NOTE: PRICE REDUCED FROM $41,500 TO $39,000. EXTENDED PAYMENT TERMS AVAILABLE. REPLACEMENT COST $125,000. James Purdey & Sons, established in 1814, is arguably the maker of the finest sporting shotguns and rifles in the world. Purdey holds Royal Warrants as gun and rifle makers to the British royal family. All guns are custom-made, largely by hand. A new Purdey shotgun starts at around $115,000 today for just the gun itself and with no extras. An extra set of barrels would add about $15,000. For sale is a wonderful best quality 20 gauge side lock side by side shotgun serial number 26431 with two sets of barrels, a leather motor case and a multitude of tools and cleaning accessories. It has a single non-selective trigger, rare on Purdey guns. It was made for Mr. J. Albert Woods of New York City, an important leader in the chemical industry, in 1953. It is in spectacular condition. The receiver is decorated with Purdey’s finest traditional rose and scroll engraving. The side plates, top tang and fences retain nearly all of their original brilliant color case hardening colors. The floor plate shows slightly less color where the piece was carried. The breaches have disk set strikers. As is standard on all Purdeys, the gun has disk set strikers and a self-opening action. Not so standard is the non- selective single trigger, favored by American sportsmen. The triggerguard blue is bright and sparkling with a miniscule bit of fading where held at the wrist. Both sets of chopper lump barrels are 26 inches long and are numbered 1 and 2. Barrel set number 1 was originally choked modified and improved cylinder, however Mr. Woods wanted less choke for skeet and small upland birds so he had them opened to improved cylinder and cylinder, the work undoubtedly done by Griffin & Howe, gunsmiths for Abercrombie & Fitch. Set number 2 retain their original boring: full and modified for pheasants and water fowl. All chambers are 2 ¾ inches in length. Barrel wall thicknesses are all between .035 and .039, well within thickness safety standards. Bore diameters range between .620 and .618 indicating that the have never been honed. Both sets of barrels have absolutely mirror-bright bores with no dings, freckles or scratches of any kind. The exterior blue finish on the number 1 set of barrels is about perfect. The number 2 set had an extremely minor bit of freckling near the breech. I had it removed by master gunsmith Dan Cullity, one of the top 10 craftsmen in the United States and a long time Colt factory engraver who apprenticed under Alvin White. These couple of spots are now close to invisible, none larger than the tip of a pin point. Both sets of barrels have smooth, concave ribs. The gun is stocked in beautiful highly figured French walnut. I can see no dings or scratches anywhere and all of the deep, hand rubbed oil finish remains. Beautifully carved drop points behind the lock plates and the super-fine checkering on the wrist and forend is simply perfect. Length of pull is 14 ¾ inches to a checkered butt. Drop at comb is 1 ¼ inches. Drop at heel is 2 5/8 inches. Weight is 5 pounds, 11 ounces. There is a gold oval engraved with the original owner’s initials inlet into the bottom of the stock between the butt and the triggerguard. Included with the gun and barrels are the following: 1. Original Purdey leather “motor” case which holds the stock, forend, both sets of barrels and all accessories. 2. One two piece mahogany cleaning rod. 3. Two turn screws. 4. One spanner for removing the disk set firing pins. 5. One nickel plated oil bottle. 6. Two nickel plated snap caps. 7. One ivory canister containing two extra firing pins. 8. One nickel plated cartridge extractor. 9. Five assorted cleaning jags. 10. Two leather pouches containing pull-through cleaning strings. 11. One vintage purple leatherette bound Purdey booklet dated 1929 giving instructions on the use and care of Purdey guns. 12. A contemporary letter from Purdeys giving the provenance of the gun. A truly beautiful and superb condition two barreled 20 gauge London best with all the goodies from the finest maker in the world. If you ordered a new one today, expect a cost of at least $125,000. Don’t miss out on this rare offering! FFL or C&R required. All shipping costs to be paid by buyer.
