No. 5 PACIFIC RIFLE IN .45-70 CALIBER, MARLIN FIREARMS COMPANY MARKED, #23XXX serial number matching on the receiver, barrel, forend (butt plate numbered in the 15XXX range and may have been a left over part used by the factory- very common to find on Ballard sporters), special long 32" octagon barrel, correctly marked "45 Govt." on barrel top ahead of receiver, barrel blue aged to a deep uncleaned plum, dark mottled brown receiver, VG forearm with one sliver on the left front edge toward the tip- old and worn in and fairly common on heavy frontier sporters and a small crack coming forward from the receiver on the same side, aged dark wood, some small wood loss around the top of the receiver back where it meets the stock- probably from oil soaking- again minor and to be expected of a Western used .45-70, double set triggers function fine, tight action, hammer spring only weak but functions, bore is dark with fine rifling and ought to clean out fine+, correct original twin thimbles intact with wiping rod, weighs approx. 11 1/2 lbs., original buckhorn rear sight with Rocky Mountain blade front sight, great caliber in a big Western Frontier rifle with lots of character and history.
