Description:
SHARPS MODEL 1853 SLANT BREECH OCTAGON PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE IN .44 CALIBER, WITH SERIAL NUMBER 11000, MADE 1854-1859, only 2240 octagon sporters were made making these classic frontier rifles quite difficult to find, this one has a medium heavy 26" octagon barrel with factory original ladder rear sight with slide intact (these original sights are usually missing) and small blade front sight, matching serial number on barrel and patch box (this was the eleven thousandth Sharps made!), has the optional (special order extra) double set triggers with adjustment screw intact, exc. Sharps marking on barrel, lock plate and upper tang, double set triggers function fine, generally fine+ to about excellent stock and forearm without any of the usual chips around the tang and lock area, barrel blue aged to an uncleaned brownish patina, gray/brown receiver, bore is a little dark with deep rifling and needs a good scrubbing out- should clean out fine or better with some possible pitting ahead of the chamber on one side that might scour out, has the correct small rounded pewter tip on the forend, brass patchbox and brass butt plate, super attractive model and one that according to letters written to the Sharps factory in the 1850s attest to incredible shooting power and accuracy in the Western U.S. It's my opinion that had the metallic cartridge been popularized a dozen years LATER than it was, the percussion Sharps would have been the most popular rifle of its time. (Note of interest: I have several new made Shiloh Sharps percussion sporting rifles in different calibers that will shoot sub 1 1/2" five shot 100 yard groups with black powder and cast bullets breech seated- lots of fun), a much nice than normally encountered example. (NOTE: that's just some oil on the stock in the second photo)
