For sale, a very cool vintage Savage Model 99 rifle chambered in 30-30 Winchester complete with a vintage/period Leupold Pioneer 4X scope with Leupold adjustable mounting system. This Savage 99 was made in 1927 and is in good shape overall. It shows some wear and use but has a great looking patina to it. It comes with a Leupold "Pioneer" scope that is 4 power and has no internal adjustments. All the sighting adjustments are made from the mounting system that Leupold created with the windage and elevation adjustments on the rear of the base. The optics on this scope are still really good. The glass is bright and clear, and the straight style crosshairs are clean and intact. Another neat feature of this rifle is that the rear sight has been removed off the barrel and replaced with a sight blank. This was done because a previous owner installed a period correct Lyman rear tang sight. The metal parts of this rifle have a lot of the original factory blue finish remaining. There are also some case colors left on the action lever in the protected areas. The bore is in excellent shape with strong rifling remaining. The stock is in pretty good shape with only one significant area of damage that I can find. The toe of the buttstock is missing a small piece of wood that has been broken off. Please see the pictures to see what I am describing. The buttstock of this rifle is unique in that there is a period compass inletted into the top spine and it appears to still function properly. This was someone's solution to making sure they always had a compass when hunting an unfamiliar area. It appears to have been part of this rifle for a very long time judging by the patina of the brass and glass lens. This is a classic American hunting rig in a readily available classic caliber with a lot of character and eye appeal. This Savage 99 would be a great addition to any collection as an investment or take it out of retirement and hunt with it!
