This is one of about 103,000 M1842 muskets that were made at the Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia. This is a .69 caliber smoothbore musket with 42” barrel with front bayonet lug underneath barrel. Crisp markings throughout with lock marked Harpers/Ferry/1849 along with Eagle over U.S., with faint 1849 marked on barrel tang. The left side of barrel is marked with visible V/P (Eagle Head) & also has inspectors mark “A” on the left barrel flat with right side barrel flat marked with visible “W.C.K.” inspector marks with U.S. stamped on heel of the buttplate in front of the buttplate screw. Visible inspector cartouches on left hand side of the stock. Overall very good condition retaining original nipple, metal is a rich dark molted brown patina. Stock is excellent showing minor abrasions. The M1842 was the first percussion musket made by both national armories & had fully interchangeable parts with the Springfield Contract. Overall a nice original untouched Model 1842 that would make a fine addition to a Civil War Collection. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Antique: Yes |
