Breech block stamped “H. FERRY/U.S./1841”. Left side of hammer stamped “AW”. Altered to carbine from a scarce Harper’s Ferry Hall Model 1841 Rifle. Pictured and discussed on pages 218 and 219 of Dr. John Murphy’s book “CONFEDERATE CARBINES AND MUSKETOONS” in his definitive chapter on Confederate Hall alterations. Forend shortened and small front sight added exactly like the Confederate Hall Carbine front sight pictured on page 216 of Dr. Murphy’s book. Ramrod with tip end missing but original. Fine condition with much of the original wood finish and plum brown metal finish over all. Perfect working order and very good rifling. Probably less than 1000 Harper’s Ferry Hall 1841 Rifles were in Southern State Armories at the outset of the Civil War. Some of these were altered to carbine length because of the acute shortage of Cavalry arms. Very few survive with this one of the few known examples. Quite rare and 100% original in every respect.
