Description:
Here's a rare, 19th Century style leather mail/express pouch. The "Registered pouch was carried right along with the Wells Fargo strong box and often had more valuables that the box it's self." It has a handle attached to a flap which is secured with a strap run through three brass loops on the front.  The strap attaches to a loop on the back with a padlock. It's a very rugged, old mailbag with heavy duty stitching up and down both sides.  The handle is attached with stitching and copper rivets. It shows age and wear but has a great look with rich coloring in an Old West style. The belt is still solid and attached to its original brass latch at the end. Despite all the heavy loads this pouch has carried, even the bottom of this pouch is still in good shape. The leather is still pliable but there are some of the typical age cracks where the leather was flexed, but no holes, breaks or tears. The stitching on one side has 2 1/2 inches of stitch missing. For it's age this bag is well preserved and would provide a century of service yet. It measures about 18 inches high, 14 inches wide, and about 4 3/4 inches deep. On the bottom is the makers mark: Can-pro Corp.  It was an important piece of express and postal history that you don't find everyday. I have added a reproduction iron padlock with keys just for fun.
