Description:
JENISON & CO Southbridge Mass. Underhammer pistol. This is one of the rarest of the signed Underhammer pistols, with about a half dozen accounted for to date. It is the typical pointed butt, brass banded stocked pattern common to the Massachusetts-Connecticut school of Underhammer pistol making. This one is 6 3/4" overall, with a 2 7/8" round/octagon barrel. It is 31 caliber and rifled. The barrel is a very dark old patina with scattered stains, some light pitting, and some thin rust. The markings "CAST-STEEL" on the left side of the barrel re relatively clear (see photos). The brass binding around the stock is a very old dark patina, uncleaned. The top strap is a lighter colored patina with very clear markings and engraving.  The serial is 23 and is visible when the stock is removed.  The numbers are stamped into the frame and top strap. Mechanically it is completely functional.  There is a repair to the hammer spring. The wood stock has seen considerable handling.  There are a series of small dents on the right side (see photos), and ther are two very small beginning cracks in the grain of the wood one at the narrow part of the stock, and one near the thin top close to the screw hole. Also, the slot in the brass binding for the trigger has been widened at some time long ago. I encourage you to examine the accompanying photos.  I have take most very close up so that all the small flaws are clear. This is a nice example of a very rare American gun.
