Description:
This early Colt has matching numbers on barrel, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, arbor pin, and wedge.  Although I do not normally remove one-piece wood grips for risk of losing a sliver of wood, these grips fit perfectly and are surely original.  Gun retains traces of blue and faded case colors.  The Texas Naval cylinder scene is about 85% intact and very distinct.  The gun cocks and locks up very crisply and tight almost as when new.  The bore has strong lands and grooves, with the expected minor evenly-scattered light porosity throughout.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I would call this one at least a 7 bore condition.

All original markings are very distinct, including the barrel address, serial numbers, inspector’s marks, and “Colt’s Patent” on frame.  The grips, while remaining nice with no evidence of sanding, do not show any government inspection markings.  Grips are proud to metal surfaces or essentially even, and are much nicer than most.

The 8” barrel fits up tightly against frame, and has not been shot loose as so many of these 1860’s will be found today.  All screws are original and remain nice, showing no signs of buggering with a bad screwdriver.

The serial number indicates an early 1863 production, the mid-Civil War period.  These continued as the principal Cavalry revolver through the Indian Wars until about 1873 when the Colt Single Action began production.  In the hands of Cowboys, Gunfighters and Pioneers moving westward, this revolver remained in use until the late 1870’s.  This is because ammunition was readily available (with bullets cast anywhere needed), and the Colt Single Action production was 90% dedicated to government contracts.

According to the Blue Book of Gun Values by Fjestad, this revolver is worth $2500.  Finding the nice all-original examples is becoming difficult, with a new book by Charles Pate on the way.  New books, when released on any Colt model, cause prices to skyrocket.
