The rammer of course has been removed, and a small blade sight added to the short barrel. This treatment was a VERY common practice of the Mormons who were moving West in the 1860-1870s. The men were well known for wearing suits and having their severely shortened “Avenging Angel” handguns concealed ….and while a few opted for the larger 44caliber Colts, the more favored models were the 36calibered Navy and Police Models. These wicked little cut-down “belly-busters” also became popular with gamblers as their “5th Ace”, and also by lawmen as a second weapon …but their main notariety was their use by the Mormons who nick-named them “Avenging Angels” or “Singing Angels”. This Colt has a fine smooth action, very decent bore (what little there is left of it!), liberal thinning blue remaining on the barrel as well as a lot of original varnish on the grips, and about 50-60% light cylinder scene. Some faint traces of faded C/H on the frame and fine markings. VERY interesting snippet of Frontier and also Mormon history. About VG+/Fine (as converted). $1495 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Antique: Yes |
