Description:
If you have been looking for a beautiful and sturdy bar-in-wood Purdey hammergun, this is the one. Recently refurbished with ribs relayed, barrels reblacked, and tight on face. Toplever is right of center. Thirty inch sleeved and nitro proofed barrels with a nicely engraved frame. A real classic made circa 1881 – 1884 this hammergun is still breaking clays and downing birds.   ***   The frame, sidelocks, forearm iron and trigger guard are nicely engraved in a classic Purdey pattern. The rebounding hammers are delicately engraved and, when cocked, lie almost entirely below the shooter’s line of sight. The action has a hidden third fastener. Overall weight is 6lb 14oz.   ***   The 30” sleeved barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” cartridges and were nitro proofed sometime between 1954 and 1984. The extractor barrels are topped by a raised, solid concave game style rib. The right barrel is bored 0.730 and has a constriction of 0.007 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032. The left barrel is also bored 0.730 and has a constriction of 0.011 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.034. A great choke combination for sporting clays and upland game.   ***   The stock and forearm are made of nicely figured European walnut. The checkering has been expertly recut and is very crisp. Stock dimensions are 14-5/8” over a 1” pad by 1-1/2” by 2-1/8”. Cast off about 1/8” for the right hand shot. The wood is beautifully finished but there are some small handling marks from normal usage. There are also a few small marks on the frame and barrels. Cased in a period case with maker’s label. Case needs some work.  ***   Bar-in-wood Purdey hammerguns are very desirable and this one has great wood and handling characteristics. Great for game or clays. A nice gun to shoot at Vintage Gunners events. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance and related charges. I give a three-day non-firing inspection and will only accept returns if gun is not as described.   ***   See this beautiful gun and other fine doubles in the MacNab booth at The Southern Side-By-Side at Deep River Sporting Clays in Sanford, NC on September 28th – 30th, 2017.
