KETLAND FLINTLOCK BROWN BESS NEW LAND PATTERN MUSKET. .75 caliber smoothbore 42” barrel with Birmingham proofs at center breech with Ketland’s “WK” barrel proof. Lock stamped with the George III cypher and “W./KETLAND” to the rear of the hammer. Brass mounts in the early Short Land Pattern style and no side plate. Butt plate tang engraved with the number “49”. Walnut stock with the original steel ramrod. Swivels have been removed. Otherwise all original and in exceptionally fine condition with the metal near mint for it’s age and the stock with all the original finish. Lock in working order. William Ketland was a prime supplier to Massachusetts and other New England States in the period preceeding the War of 1812. He contracted with various states to supply arms and parts until the war began and also sold pattern muskets and pistols thru various dealers and agents for private purchase. (Ref.
