Description: SOLD...Antique 1876 Winchester octagon barrel. Here is a decent 1876 Winchester in 40-60 caliber. Has the standard 28" barrel. S/N 48015 and made in 1884 with Cody work sheet and all is correct. The bore is very good for a1876. Visible strong rifling all the way through with some black powder roughness but no big craters and no rings or bulges. Near impossible to find real nice bores in these 76's. It still shoots straight with my hand load cast bullets and would do well with a jacketed bullet also. The mechanics are excellent and it feeds, fires and ejects perfectly with no backed out primers or bulged cases. Hammer notches are perfect also. All the springs are stong throughout..The metal on the barrel is a dark blue brown patina with some scattered moderate pitting on the top flate of the barrel in places. Heavier pitting towards the end of the barrel. I can send more photos of it if you want to see. The barrel also has some original blue showing in good light. Maybe 15% or so. No pitting on the mag tube so it might be a later replacement but looks old and fits perfectly and tight. The receiver has faded to a medium brown patina with no pitting but has a ding in front of the dust cover {see photo}. Still retains the original dust cover that retracts with the lever throw and is still fairly tight. All the markings are excellent. The front sight has had the blade replaced long ago but the base is original. The rear sight is original Winchester that has been filed flat or could be an original flat top sight. Elevator looks like a correct newer replacement. The screw heads show some turning but not all burred and all are serviceable. The wood is decent with the forearm having a very worn spot on the right side as it is dipped in but not a gouge as it is smooth. It is black in color and do not know if it got to close to a fire or what ?? Your call on that one. It also has a large sliver out of the front left side barrel channel {sse photo}. The butt stock is much better with NO splits or cracks. It fits tight to the metal with no gaps or shrinking. All the wood fits tight and has nice color and not all oil soaked as many you will see. All in all, not that bad of a gun for a 76. It shows honest use and wear and tear as many will show but it is all there and it shoots just fine. It is priced about as cheap as you will find a 76 and would be an entery level gun and a good shooter. You can't hurt this one dragging it through the woods !!!
