Description:
This Damascus-barrelled Colt Model 1883 and similar high-quality guns manufactured in America in the last decades of the 19th century were made to be hunted.  However, the advent of high-pressure powders by 1915 pretty much took them from the field to become artifacts of an earlier age.   Today, the ready availability of low pressure shells designed for such guns has given them a new life when properly reconditioned.  This gun, which was manufactured in 1891, is not only ready to go back into the field, it has been there.  Pictured are a pair of wood ducks recently taken by this gun, most likely the first in a 100 years, using RST low-pressure shells containing bismuth shot.

The high grade walnut stock and forearm on this gun have been brought back to their original beauty by drawing out damaging petroleum-based oils, steaming and sanding out dents and scratches as possible without changing the nature of the gun, re-cutting the checkering, and applying a hand-rubbed stock oil finish.  The 30” fine Damascus barrels are refinished using the traditional process of slow rust bluing and etching.  The bores are in excellent condition.  The receiver is without pits or scratches, and the lettering and limited engraving is crisp.

The barrels are choked Improved Cylinder (.010) and Improved Modified (.025).  The wall thicknesses (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle are 039/.043/.036 and at the middle of the barrel are .040/.041/.037.  The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are.041/.040/.036 and .043/.040/.037, respectively.  Bores 9” from the breech are .735/.736, respectively.  Chambers are 2-3/4”.  The gun locks up tight and on face.  This shotgun weighs 8 lbs 2 oz.  The drop at the comb is 1-7/8” and at the heel 3”.  Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of a modern LimbSaver recoil pad is 14-1/4”.  [The gun also comes with the original correctly-fitted hard rubber butt plate, which Back in Time will re-install if desired by the buyer.]  All serial numbers, 5809, match.

The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This gun has been fired on multiple occasions using low pressure 2-3/4” shells produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one over a hundred and twenty years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed.  The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.  The original price does not include shipping, which is paid by the buyer.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Stephen Wesbrook, 703-625-4830; Back in Time, LLC  -  preserving late 19th and early 20th Century double shotguns.
