Description:
Rare Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Revolver This 1882 made revolver left the factory nickel plated but has since been refinished and re-nickelled. serial #84628, 44-40 W.C.F., 4 3/4” barrel.

The hidden gem of this Six Shooter is the original type 1 eagle hard rubber scales. The grips are in poor condition with a repair present on the left panel’s interior around the pin hole and a lighter repair on the butt’s exterior. The right panel is repaired on the toe and around the pin hole and the right scale has cracked in two across the escutcheon... Both panels show heavy use but the checkering is still visible as are the Rampant Colt and Federal eagle. Enough detail exists to verify they are type I by the star field on the eagle, location of the Rampant Colt and the step found on the underside of the panel.
Author Keith Cochran in his books Colt Peacemaker Ready-Reference Handbook and Colt Peacemaker Encyclopedia (Vol. 1), states
"type I eagle grips were made for one month then discontinued due to problems with cracking, warping plus shrinking from heat and sunlight. It is thought that few survived as they were generally replaced by the owners as they failed".
A factory letter from Colt dated January 10, 1992 indicates this gun was shipped from the factory along with six other revolvers on March 30, 1882 to “Schoverling, Daly & Gales of New York N.Y. The gun was chambered for 44-40, nickel plated, had a 4 3/4” barrel and rubber stocks.
When you consider these grips were only made during January 1882 and most of them failed, this is truly a unique opportunity for the Colt collector. $3350.  You may email me directly at hearitaffordablehearing
