Description:
Take a step back in time with this Grade 3 Remington Model 1889, which was manufactured in 1901. Remington produced the Model 1889 until 1908. Remington hammer guns, along with those made by Ithaca, LC Smith, and others may have not been the guns that “won the West,” but they were certainly the guns that settled the West (and Midwest). This gun was probably first owned by a farmer or rancher who used it to put food on the table and control predators.
This vintage shotgun is properly restored to bring it back to the condition similar to or better than it would have been after 4 or 5 years of use by the original owner. The wood, as refinished with hand rubbed stock oil, is beautiful and solid. The Oxford Crolle pattern in the Damascus steel is distinct, as refinished using the tradition process of slow rust bluing and etching. The bores are bright as honed. The color case hardening, which was redone by Classic Guns in Crete, IL, is brilliant.
The 32” barrels are choked Light Modified (.015) and Improved Modified (.025). The wall thicknesses (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle are 046/.037/.042 and at the middle of the barrel are .058/.050/.050. The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .046/.040/.038 and .059/.055/.0548, respectively. Bores 9” from the breech are both 729. Chambers are 2-3/4”. The gun locks up tight and on face; the top lever returns to center. This shotgun weighs 9 lb 3 oz. The drop at the comb is 2-1/8 and at the heel 3-1/8”. Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the original butt plate is 14”. All serial numbers, 207705, match.
The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired using low pressure 2-3/4” shells produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation. However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one a hundred and fifteen years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed. The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.
