Description:
For sale, a beautiful early production pre-war Harrington and Richardson "Sportsman" model .22 revolver.  This 9-shot .22 caliber H&R revolver was made somewhere between 1937 and 1939.  This example is a pre-Model 999, as the Sportsman became the Model 999 in 1940.  It is an exceptionally well made and finished revolver.  The quality of workmanship compares favorably with other pre-war revolvers from Colt and S&W.  This revolver was the finest model that Harrington & Richardson offered at that time.  Mechanically this Sportsman is in perfect working condition.  It can be fired single or double action, and it locks up tight just like the day it left the factory.  The top break action is smooth, and the auto ejector feature works perfectly and is in-time.  The bore is pristine and bright.  The rifling still looks sharp and shows no signs of wear.  This Sportsman model H&R came with checkered walnut grips from the factory and they are in excellent condition with just a tiny bit of handling marks.  The checkering is still sharp and crisp, and there are no signs of wear, cracks, or repairs.  The original factory high gloss blue finish still looks great on this pistol overall.  As you can see in the pictures, there are a few small areas where surface rust has formed in the past that has thinned out the blue in those areas, particularly on the cylinder itself.  There is some scattered speckling throughout the blue finish but the oxidation spots are tiny, and they do not detract much from the revolver's handsome appearance.  The hammer is case hardened and the case colors on the hammer are beautiful.  The front and rear sights are target style and both are adjustable.  This H&R Sportsman is an excellent example of this popular model and it is obvious that it has seen very little use during its life.  This revolver would be a great addition to any collection, and with proper care could be shot as well without concern for lowering it's value.
