CIVIL WAR USS MASSACHUSETTS PRESENTATION AMES U.S.N. MODEL 1852 OFFICER’S SWORD AND SCABBARD DATED DEC. 23, 1862. 34” o/a with 27 ½” blade with naval motif etching and maker’s name at ricasso. Scabbard throat engraved in script “JOSEPH RICHARDSON/FROM HIS FRIENDS/DEC. 23, 1862”. Excellent condition overall with most of the gilding on the mounts and all the etching on the blade. Joseph Richardson was appointed Acting Master’s Mate of the USS Massachusetts on December 29, 1862- a few days after his friends gave him the sword. Excellent condition overall including the leather covered scabbard and grip wrap. 100% original in every respect.
