Description:
Manufactured in 1863, these Sharps Carbines were converted to fire the new .50/70 metallic cartridge in 1865 and 1866 after the Civil War ended. These carbines were then issued to all of the U.S. Cavalry forces sent west during the Indian War period and were very popular with the men due to their excellent design, accuracy, and ease of operation. This gun is in excellent original condition as reissued in 1866, and still retains much of it's original finish. The action is tight and the bore is near perfect, still bright and crisp. The inspector's cartouche on the left side of the butt stock is still very visible and sharp, and the wood itself has no cracks or breaks.
