Description:
This  Parker Brothers 12-gauge top-action hammer shotgun was manufactured in 1885 for one purpose -- to hunt.  The sports that dominate wingshooting today, such as sporting clays and skeet, did not exist. However, the advent of new high pressure powders had by WWI caused most owners to move their Damascus and twist steel barreled guns from the field to the closet, where they sat for a century as artifacts of an earlier time.  Today, the ready availability of factory-produced low-pressure shells designed for antique and vintage guns has given them a new life in the field when properly restored or reconditioned, as demonstrated by the lead picture of this gun and what is likely the first grouse taken by it in a 100 years.

This American classic is properly restored to a condition similar to what it would have been after a couple of years use by the original owner.  The wood is refreshed with a hand-rubbed stock oil finish and the checkering re-cut.  The exteriors of the 30 inch twist steel barrels are flawless, as refinished, and the bores are excellent.  The line engravings on the receiver, side plates, and hammers, as well as the vine pattern on the barrels and flower in the top-rib, are as new as refreshed by firearms engraver J.J. Roberts, Manassas, VA.  The color case hardening is brilliant, as redone by Turnbull Manufacturing, Bloomfield, NY.  The gun locks up tight and on face.  All serial numbers, 36721, match.

The right barrel is choked IC (.010) and the left Skeet (.005).  The chambers are 2-5/8 inches.  This shotgun, which has a number 2 frame, weighs 7 lbs 14 oz.  The drop at the comb is 2 inches and at the heel 3 inches.  Length of pull is 14-1/4” to the end of the original steel butt plate.  The trigger pull for the right barrel is 6 lbs and the left is 6-1/2 lbs.  The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 020/.027/.035 and at the middle of the barrel is .025/.026/.039; the left barrel is .022/.027/.029 and .023/.024/.020, respectively.  Bores 9” from the breech are .both .741.

The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This shotgun has been fired using low pressure 2-1/2” shells produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one a hundred and thirty years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed.  The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.  The listed price of the gun does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Stephen Wesbrook, 703-625-4830; Back in Time, LLC  --  preserving late 19th and early 20th Century double shotguns.
