Cal 44 RF. Serial number 4696. Many privately purchased Henry's were carried by soldiers during the Civil War. These rifles cost them $42 which was about 3 months soldiers pay. This is one such rifle. George Dodd Hughes, the original owner of this Henry, was a Second Liutenant in the 1st Regiment of New York Engineers Company E serving commissions from September of 1861 and re-enlisting in April of 1865. The family states that there is a significant collection of letters, documents and artifacts relating to George Dodd Hughes that can be found in the museum at Fort Clinch on Amelia Island, Florida. This rifle is in VG condition and looks to have been well cared for. Bbl has generouse traces of blue in protected areas. Brass frame is a beautiful butterscotch patina. The famous "Henry Bump" is present as are the sling swivels. Copies of Military Enlistment Documents as well as a family tree accompany the rifle. This is a great piece of American History and would be a fantastic addition to any collection!!
