Description:
Savage Model 99 built in 1914 for the Montreal Home Guard in Canada. This scarce bayonet show the standard markings being the Savage Indian Head logo on the ricasso. This example is unusual as it shows unit markings on the left side of the grip. A 5 over BM Co. The 5 is the issue number and BM stands for the Bank of Montreal Company. Employees of the Bank of Montreal represented a significant number of the Home Guard members. The BM mark (BMG) has also been found on the buttstocks of Ross Model 10 rifles. These rifles were purchased for the homeguard. The reverse of the scabbard shows #28 which was an issue or rack number. The survival rate of these bayonets is relatively low as numerous examples were modified and converted to hunting knives following WWI issue. This is the only unit marked example we have encountered.
