Description:
This is a handsome, Type II, German made saber that measures 41 1/2” overall, with a 35 5/8” curved, single-edged blade having wide and narrow fullers. The blade has an overall lightly freckled, pewter gray patina throughout with crisp “P.S. JUSTICE/PHILADA” trademark on the ricasso reverse. The brass hilt has an overall mellow ochre patina with a few hints of brighter underlying metal along some of the edges., and the leather grip is in fine shape with an intact braided wire wrap along its entire length. The scabbard has a dark, plum-brown patina with some mild fading at the throat and on the edges of the drag. Phillip S. Justice was a maker of railroad car springs with a sideline in imported firearms and hardware, who received contracts for various military equipment (including sword) during the Civil War. He delivered swords made entirely in America, as well as American assembled swords from foreign components, and trademarked German import sabers (such as this example). This is a nice, high quality foreign imported Civil War sword, by a desirable maker/importer, and is in fine-near excellent condition. It would make a terrific addition to any collection.
