Description:
SALE PENDING

Creighton Audette built heavy barrel target rifle on pre-64 Winchester Model 70 action, caliber .308. Serial number is 157877, receiver dates to 1950. Stainless steel barrel with a bright bore. Redfield Olympic front and rear sights. Monte Carlo stock, adjustable buttplate. Weight of rifle is 13.6 pounds.

Audette was a noted long range shooter and gunsmith. He was a Palma Team competitor and captain in the 1970s and 1980s. He custom built target rifles, but many believe his most noted contribution is the ladder method of load development, a method for developing precision rifle handloads.

This rifle is in excellent used condition. We shot the rifle at 100 yards. Watch a video of our test firing at our YouTube channel, Fernwood Armory TV.

Part Details:

Barrel: 27” from tip to bolt face. Stainless steel. 1” diameter at front end. The collector that the rifle comes from said the barrel is made by Hart. Marked “C. O. AUDETTE .308 WIN.”. Has two tapped holes just ahead of the diameter step for a scope mount block. 6-groove rifling. Bore is bright, riflings sharp. Has some handling marks and spots of minor corrosion on exterior.

Receiver: blued, no pitting visible. The rifle was not disassembled. Has a scope mounting block at the front.

Sights: Redfield Olympic front and rear. Rear sight mounting block (attached to receiver) is marked “WB-490”. The rear aperture surround is rubber, a little bit warped from the case the rifle was in, but is flexible and in good condition. Could probably be made more flat by clamping it for a time.

Stock: looks like walnut to us. Has pronounced Monte Carlo shape, definitely for the right-handed shooter. Has heavy clear coat, most likely to minimize effects of humidity. No cracks, some marks from handling and use. Has long channel for the adjustable hand stop/sling swivel. Paper will slip between barrel and stock with no resistance, back to the diameter step.

Buttplate: pad is “SURE GRIP” made by The Mershon Co. The 3 aluminum plates completing the assembly were probably fabricated. The plate is adjustable for length, and can be moved vertically (see photos). LOP with buttplate unextended is 13”.

Trigger pull: measured exactly 3 pounds on the Timney gauge.
