H. HORSTMANN & SONS U.S. MARINE CORPS OFFICER’S SWORD AND SCABBARD. 38” o/a with 32 ½” brilliantly and profusely etched blade with martial motifs including a fine “EAGLE” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” banner as well as a large “U.S.M.C.”. Ricasso etched in a panel “W.H. HORSTMANN/&SONS/PHILADELPHIA”. Brass U.S. Foot Officer’s style hilt adopted by the Marines in 1859 replacing the Mameluke for the duration of the Civil War. The Mameluke was re-adopted after the war and these Foot Officer type swords are very scarce and desirable. Seldom seen and almost never in this nice condition and with the original scabbard which is most often missing or damaged by exposure to conditions at sea. 100% original and with extra nice, bright etching and with unpolished brass hilt and mounts. Original leather grip wrap and wire. Excellent scabbard of correct Marine Corps type without ring mounts. Only one we have had with a scabbard. SOLD |
