Spencer Civil War Army Repeating Rifle 16-68
Military Rifle or Musket: 30” barrel; full stock forend with iron tip; fastened by three barrel bands; sling swivels.
Army Model: Civil War Production; made c. 1863-1864. 52 caliber. Six groove rifling; front sight doubles as lug for socket type bayonet. 11,470 delivered. Serial range from approximately 700 to 11009 with another small group in the 28000 range. It was this “Army Model” rifle with which Custer Fifth Michigan Cavalry was armed at Gettysburg.
Post-war alterations of Army Model rifle by Springfield Armory c. 1867-74 Caliber 50 rimfire, fitted with “Stabler Cut-Off” device. Total 1,215 altered.
Condition: Has stabler cutoff, serial# 1618, metal is clean with a few small patches of light corrosion, stock has a few dents, dings hairline cracks and someone long ago carved 1108 in stock. Rifling worn and some corrosion.
