Made in Liege, Belgium, circa 1780, by M. Lelies ( and so marked on the lock). The 6 & 1/2 " iron barrel is half octogon and half round in shape and is uniformly dark in color, as is the lock and hammer. . It flairs out the barrel end to a 1 & 3/8" opening. The full walnut stock is in good condition .The trigger guard, butt, side plate and the ramrod guide and ramrod (all metal with a wooden insert) tip are all brass and in good condition. Most of the brass parts have either a design or some engraving. The action is very strong and the hammer holds on full and half cock. This type of pistol was often used aboard ships to repel boarders (pirates) and to fire a pyrotechnic device to set fire to the sails of an enemy ship.
