Description:
This pistol is silver plated and it is extensively engraved and has ivory grips. The barrel length is 7 1/2 inches rifled with 7 grooves, right twist. The engraving is consistent in appearance with the work done by L. D. Nimschke who did much of the engraving for Colt during the 1850's. Nimschke worked out of his shop in New York. A similar style of engraving has also been attributed to other unknown New York engravers. Further, R. L. Wilson's book, Colt Engraving, depicts a 3rd Model Dragoon that came from a museum in Mexico with engraving similar in design to this specimen. He also reported that only a few hundred 3rd. Model Dragoons were decorated and that they were done in serial numbered groups. Of those, ones shipped with ivory grips are rare.
This firearm came from the Milhous brothers' collection, however, no history of ownership has been determined.
